Homecoming concert brings in new generation of stars

Homecoming concert brings in new generation of stars

Maliik Obee, Staff WriterThis week wouldn’t truly be homecoming week at Morgan State University without its highly anticipated annual concert. This year, the bill has lived up to the hype, consisting of rappers Lil Uzi Vert, Shy Glizzy and A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie. Morgan’s football team will look to improve on its 2-3 on Oct. 22 against the North Carolina Central University Eagles. While that is the focus of the week, the concert is the centerpiece for Morgan’s less athletic student body. Headlining the event is Philadelphia rapper Lil Uzi, who has made quite a name for himself following the […]

Students of Morgan State join in on national anthem protest

by Blair Young, Staff WriterThe controversy around the national anthem has made its way to Morgan State University, as two students have started a petition in order to change the way pre-game ceremonies should be held on campus. “After learning the racist history of “The Star-Spangled Banner”, we felt that students should be presented with another choice,” said Kendra Hawkins, senior multiplatform production major. “We have to continue on what Kaepernick started,” she added. Canada’s Drake currently has a stronghold on the rap industry; couple four platinum albums with a slew of Billboard hits, and you have one of the most consistent artists of the last decade. Atlanta artist Future has an impressive resume of his own since his introduction to the world in 2011. Ironically, his first radio hit “Tony Montana” featured an assist from Drake that propelled him into a household name. Future has several chart-topping hits and solid […]

What Happened to Go-Go?

What Happened to Go-Go?

Hip-Hop was born in the concrete jungle of the South Bronx. Jazz got its start in the bowels of New Orleans.  The Nation’s Capital is the home of a genre of its own; a gumbo of hip-hop, funk and R&B called Go-Go. The exact year it was created isn’t exactly clear, but one man is given sole credit. The “Godfather” Chuck Brown, originally from Gaston, North Carolina, widely observed as the king of go-go. The various bands and colorful characters of go-go have managed to take it to unimaginable heights over the last 50 plus years, establishing it as a […]
