Women’s basketball coach relieved of duties

Katia Jordan, Contributing WriterMorgan State University has reassigned Donald Beasley, the head coach of the women’s basketball team, to a new position at within the school, according to athletic director Floyd Kerr. “Coach Beasley will be reassigned within the University to work in marketing and development,” said Kerr, who is retiring at the end of this month. Kerr declined to say why Beasley was relieved as head coach, citing school policy. Beasley was placed on administrative leave and subsequently reassigned following a June 14 Baltimore Sun story where current and former players alleged verbal abuse from Beasley. Lady Bears survive first round

by Devon AshbyThe Morgan State Lady Bears won their first round matchup against the North Carolina Central Lady Eagles, 52-42, on Monday afternoon to kick off the MEAC Tournament. Sophomore guard Zuri White recorded a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 14 rebounds to lead the way for Morgan. The Lady Bears out-rebounded NCCU, 45-38, with 21 of those coming on the offensive end. Morgan’s defense was the difference in the game, holding the Lady Eagles to a 35.6 percent shooting performance. They also forced 16 turnovers, five more than they committed. In what turned out to be a very defensive oriented showdown on Senior Night for the Bears, both teams shot under 25 percent in the first half and the score at halftime was just 20-18 in favor of Morgan. Lady Bears win to take top spot in MEAC

Although the Lady Bears have a better record than the Lady Eagles’ four-win mark, the game was competitive up to the final whistle. They opened the game with a 7-0 run in the first quarter, and in the second half they came out with similar intensity despite trailing.
