Closing the HBCU-9 sesquicentennial celebration

This year marks not only the historic sesquicentennial celebration for Morgan State University, but for eight other historically black colleges and universities as they unite at Morgan to recognize their sesquicentennial celebrations. Howard University, Alabama State University, Talladega College, John C. Smith University, St. Augustine’s University, Barber-Scotia College, Fayetteville State University and Morehouse College joined Morgan for a week long celebration as the nine universities honoring 150 years in service. Morgan breaks ground on its new $88 million student services building

Alumni, scholars and local officials gathered for the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Calvin and Tina Tyler Hall, which is set to open on Morgan State University’s campus in 2020. The building will be named after two of the University’s most generous supporters and known philanthropists, alumnus Calvin Tyler and his wife Tina. It is an $88 million investment for a new student services building and will house nearly 20 departments including Records and Registration, Admissions and Financial Aid. Details on the event ‘Black Liberation: Life, Death, and Queer Resistance’

Anika Simpson, co-chair of LGBTQA advisory council and coordinator of the women and gender studies program, has high hopes for students who attend the upcoming project titled “Black Liberation: Life, Death, and Queer Resistance.” The event will not only bring awareness to the struggles blacks have experienced in the African-American community, but it will also aim to help students get involved in black liberation. “I hope students leave this event with [a] project to help black liberation… the symposium’s timeliness given the political climate we’re in, explains why this is critical and expresses the urgency to become aware,” said Simpson. The 2017 Lady Bears volleyball squad is led by two seniors who demonstrate hard work on the court and off the court. Michaela Collins and Keana Browne have assumed the role of leadership of the Lady Bears. A Lady Bears team who have six juniors with some potential.
