Balancing image with information at Morgan

On Sunday September 23, 2012, Morgan State University sophomore Darian Hicks was found dead in the back of his car from an apparent drug overdose. His lifeless body was discovered in front of Marble Hall Gardens, an apartment complex that Morgan students share with Baltimore locals. Typically, news of death, violence, crime or foul play that occurs in the Morgan community spreads quickly. However, it wasn’t until a week after Hicks’ death and, coincidentally, the day of his homegoing service that most students learned of his untimely passing. “I didn’t know anything about Darian. I didn’t know how he died, […]

Is marijuana a societal problem or a recreational cure?

The sun begins to sleep, the campus becomes home to silent wind, human life is no where to be found, until music blasts through the speakers, the room fills with smoke, and eyes roll back as a Morgan State University student takes a puff of marijuana to eradicate horrors of a stressful week. For this student, Chris Williams (a pseudonym because he did not want his name publicized), smoking is a way of relaxing. He is not alone. The men’s basketball team started their season off with an away game at The University of South Carolina on Nov. 10. That day, 19-year-old Morgan State student Darian Hicks lost his life in the back seat of his car after a long night of partying with his friends throughout the city of Baltimore and allegedly over-dosing on the prescription pill, Xanax. His friends, who found his body that morning, and his family shed many tears in disbelief as they stared at the white body bag slowly being zipped up and carried into […]

Men lie, women lie, numbers don’t?

“Reputation is what people think of you. Character is who you really are.” The character of Morgan State University, seen through the eyes of the students is strong and tenacious. “We, Morganites, make everything from nothing,” says Chinedu Nweze, founder of the X Assembly, an activist and humanitarian group on campus. “Put us anywhere in the world with little resources and the spirit of Morgan will cause us to create the most innovative things mankind has ever seen.” However, Morgan’s reputation does not fare as well in the eyes of the public. “Morgan is dangerous,” says Ajene’ Hall, senior at […]
